The work consists of the design and manufacture of an auxiliary gen set for the Empalme I combined cycle power plant located in the Mexican state of Sonora, a project led by the consortium formed by OHL Industrial and the SENER engineering group and promoted by the Federal Electricity Commission of Mexico (CFE).
The auxiliary gen set is the BENZA (trade mark of INTERNACO), model BZ 2520 MM-T6 I40, of 2,520 kVA in emergency, for the supply of power, control and telemetry of critical loads associated with two gas turbines and one steam turbine, for a total of 704 MWe generated at the Mexican combined cycle plant.
In addition, INTERNACO will be responsible for the generation of engineering documentation, transport to plant, installation of the gen set complementary systems (fuel tank, exhaust gas structure, etc.), commissioning, training and supply of spare parts for 2 years of operation.
A tailor-made gen set
The final customer, CFE, has requested that a series of requirements be implemented in the gen set, to customize it according to its regulations and its quality standards. It consists of an ISO 40 ‘High Cube container generation system (12 m length x 2,5 m, width x 2.9 m height and 25 tons of weight), built in a sustainable way, with maximum sound and thermal insulation.
It has an electric control room with air conditioning, detection and fire suppression systems, with different areas of extinction by water spray (in diesel generator room) and CO2 (in electric control room).
INTERNACO and the BENZA ENERGÍA division, in charge of project management, have taken care of the design and finishes and have included leading brands equipment, optimizing customer’s after-sales experience by increasing the components durability and facilitating maintenance and replacement of their spare parts, they explain in a statement.
In this sense, engines, alternators, PLC’s and switches from renowned brands (MTU, Marelli, ABB and Schneider) have been used. In addition, the container incorporates a removable roof to facilitate future maintenance and replacement of heavy parts.
Automated interconnected control
At the automation level, CFE has required that the system be managed, monitored and controlled entirely from the plant central control panel (SCADA). To do so, INTERNACO has set an automated control system interconnected with the aforementioned SCADA, for the management and control of alarms, communications and parameters, as well as the interconnection and synchronization of the generator with the power rods of the associated power grid.
It is important to note that the gen set developed by INTERNACO guarantees maximum power even under the most adverse possible conditions. In this project this is the case due to height and the high ambient temperature and conditions of the project, which can reach 52 degrees Celsius.
INTERNACO has taken into account all international standards of quality and safety, as well as those in force in Mexico, the host country for the equipment. On the other hand, the vicinity of Empalme is located in a seismic sensitive zone reason why the container has been designed taking into consideration the most adverse seismic situations for the structural calculations.
