APM Terminals has embarked on the project to modernize the port of Callao, in Peru, the country’s largest and the largest on the West Coast of South America. MTU Onsite Energy will provide three generators with 20-cylinder engines of the 4000 series as a source of emergency power.
The port of Callao acts as a commercial and marine link between the city and its surroundings. Containerized cargo and bulk such as, for example, metals, grain, fertilizers, chemicals, coal, animal oils, plant and machinery pass through the port.
Its owner, APM Terminals has embarked on a project to modernize it in order to give it more capacity, more resources to handle larger vessels and finally, the ability to support the agricultural sector, which is growing and will turn Peru into a more competitive country globally.
To do this, MTU Onsite Energy, will provide three gen sets that have 20-cylinder engines of the 4000 series and will operate as emergency power source. JJC General Contractors South America also responsible for the installation of the gen sets are in charge of the modernization project.
Julio Valeriano, project manager from JJC General Contractors South America, said “the transformation of the port Callao is intended to make it a center of trade and development for Peru and Latin America. It is imperative to have an emergency power source to prevent key systems such as cooling or bridge cranes stop working “.
As he explained, the choice of MTU Onsite Energy to supply this emergency power lies on several reasons: its products are of high technology, they employ highly qualified staff and have an official distributor in Peru, Peru MTU Detroit Diesel. “We are confident of having made a good choice,” he said.
A question of seconds
The many hours of engineering and development of 4000 series gen sets results in fuel consumption below their competitors and unprecedented reliability and availability, MTU Onsite Energy claims. In case of the main power source of the port being lost, the switchboard (ATS) transfers electric charge to MTU Onsite Energy groups in seconds, they say.
Dante Romero, director of the Energy Department in Detroit Diesel MTU Peru, said “the fact of participating in the modernization of the port of Callao says a lot about the reputation that MTU Onsite Energy products have acquired around the world. All our customers in the region are extremely pleased with these gen sets and the Callao port directors will not be an exception. “
Detroit Diesel MTU Peru is an MTU Onsite Energy products authorized distributor, responsible for providing emergency and auxiliary as well as main power supply solutions. In this particular project, Detroit Diesel MTU Peru has been in charge of implementing the project, developing the engineering, supplying, installing and carrying out the appropriate test to the systems.
