Venezuela overcomes “the most dangerous moment” of its electrical history

On July 1, President of the Republic of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro announced the cessation of the Load Management Plan (PAC for its acronym in Spanish) that it had to start months ago due to the energy crisis that was generated when the country, whose main source of energy is hydroelectric power, suffered a severe and prolonged drought.

Among the measures adopted then to reduce consumption were the temporary suspension of work activity in the public sector on Wednesdays and Thursdays or part-time and free Fridays for public servants.

Guri Reservoir Recovery

I have to say that thank God, we were able to overcome the most dangerous moment lived in the history of power in Venezuela,” said last July 1st Nicolas Maduro when he said that sustained recovery of water levels at the Guri Reservoir had been achieved, which on other occasions had supplied electricity to up to 70% of the country’s population.

According to a statement from the Ministry of People’s Power for Electricity, MPPEE, Venezuelan President also noted that the country had been at a distance of just a few days of the energy collapse due to the very low levels of Guri, and had faced the possibility of reaching soaring levels of operational risk for the turbines or absence of water to operate them. “When I took all these measures, it was because we were counting drop by drop the Guri” Maduro said.

The note says that Guri levels have recovered and reached the height of 248 m.s.n.m, the point that had been previously pointed out as the moment when the PAC would be suspended. Before officially announcing the end of these measures he signaled that never before had a rationing plan been made as the one launched and that “the people stoically endured it.”

Reactions in the national press did not wait. The newspaper “El Nacional” quoted sources that claimed four days later that the reservoir had not risen enough and that the level of the reservoir on  July 3 was only 9.71 meters above the critical level of 240 meters. Besides the rains are not precisely insured which makes fear that this might happen again in 2017 for the same critical situation experienced in these past months and which has been reported by EnergyNews.
