Lighting in Qatar

Doha Expressway is the commitment to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability of Qatar, a project to create a modern road network throughout the country so that everything is connected through the city of Doha. To achieve this, the required solutions for public lighting and outdoor tunnel will be provided by GE Lighting.

GE Lighting was selected as a partner for public lighting for the prestigious Doha Expressway project in Qatar. The company has provided efficient lighting solutions for tunnels and streets that ensure low maintenance costs and new aesthetic designs that promote environmental sustainability.

What is the Doha Expressway

The Expressway Programme aims to provide vital transportation links across Qatar and thus connect key cities, towns and villages with high quality national highways and urban arterial routes.

The entire network of motorways, roads and local roads of Qatar has been reviewed as part of this program. Major improvements and enhancements to existing projects have been planned. It aims to develop a road network that benefits all communities and provides sustainable traffic management solutions such as in the advanced countries.

It consists of more than 900 kilometers of new roads and a series of underpasses and exchanges at various levels to allow for better traffic and travel times.

This prestigious project definitely reflected the commitment by the Government of Qatar to providing a state- of- the art transport infrastructure in order to address the increasing vehicular traffic with the outdoor lighting solutions chosen to improve energy efficiency, aesthetics and result in a minimal environmental impact.

Smart lighting

GE Lighting will be responsible to provide a highly efficient solution to the project. GE studied the best design and technical capacity to achieve efficiency with the fewer possible amount of luminaires in line with customer expectations. Another challenge was the project’s time of delivery which GE addressed through its supply chain and maximizing operational efficiency to deliver the project on the date agreed.

The company focused on its extensive experience to cater the diverse needs of the Doha Expressway project. Key products used include the range of PFE-400 powerful projectors that can be fitted with sodium lamps of up to 400W. These luminaires were selected for their ability to ensure excellent lighting in tunnels, motorways interchanges and intersections. The GE T5 luminaires family represents a significant advance in fluorescent technology and they were also used for the project.

The combination of specialized light distributions – provides easy visual adaptation, low glare and good visibility – and GE’s lighting fixtures for tunnels are a perfect choice for such installations. Among other considerations was the use of fewer accessories to facilitate maintenance and reduce time.

Reduced consumption

The installation of GE Lighting solutions for tunnels and outdoor lighting has helped achieve a reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional existing street lighting solutions. The solutions will also help reduce maintenance costs and other expenses associated with outdoor lighting.

After having been a partner of prestigious lighting projects in the country, GE’s most successful project consists in supporting the country with energy efficiency solutions that boost comprehensive sustainability.
