Huelva municipalities of Almonaster La Real, Cala, Calañas, El Campillo, Campofrio, Chucena, Jabugo, Puebla de Guzman and Villarrasa have joined together to implement steps towards efficient management of street lighting. An investment of over € 2,500,000 and which they expect will provide energy savings over 70%.

The Andalusian Energy Agency estimated in 2011 that the implementation in all the Andalusian municipalities of energy-saving measures and strategies described in its Guide to saving and energy efficiency in municipalities could produce annual energy savings of 365.5 GWh, an annual cost savings of 54 million euro, more than 30% of spending by that time, and a reduction in CO2 emissions of 380,000 tons per year.

And municipalities are increasingly aware of the advantages of undertaking these measures. In this context, the deputation of Huelva has awarded to Gamma Solutions the efficient management of the street lighting installations of 9 municipalities in Huelva (Almonaster La Real, Cala, Calañas, El Campillo, Campofrio, Chucena, Jabugo, Puebla Guzman, Villarrasa) who have joined to be part of this energy services contract amounting to 7.142.740,11 €.

The investment required is expected to exceed € 2,500,000 over the next 12 years. According to Gamma Solutions, energy savings in excess of 70% will be achieved through the renewal of 6,422 light points and 144 control panels, upgrading of facilities, adaptation to current regulations and improving efficiency, light output and street lighting comfort.

LED technology

As for the renewal of the points of light, discharge lamps that are currently installed, mostly mercury vapor, high-pressure sodium vapor and metal halide lamps, among others, will be replaced entirely by LED technology lamps.

Furthermore, the implementation of the project involves the lighting management for a period of 12 years, implementing to this end a monitoring system at all command centers to monitor and measure parameters such as current, voltage, or electric power and facilitate the remote management of street lighting allowing switching on and off control.

30 beneficiary communities

These improvements will not only benefit the nine Huelva municipalities but also urban areas dependent thereof, so that around 30 locations will benefit from the actions to be implemented in the coming months.

This new contract will mean significant savings in both the energy aspect of the municipalities, as in the economic one: 1.7 million euro. The abovementioned actions translate into street lighting facilities characterized by innovation and efficiency that place the Andalusian province at the forefront on energy efficiency in the country.

The contract awarded to Gamma Solutions also includes the comprehensive maintenance of facilities, both preventive (cleanings, retightening, control parameters, etc …) and corrective (replacement of malfunctioning elements).
