Record demand coverage from wind.
Red Elétrica has published the results of energy demand in September, that after removing calendar and seasonal effects, fell by 1.9% over the same month last year. Gross demand of 19,892 GWh was 5% lower than in September 2011. This difference is explained because there is an additional weekend in the month and because temperatures have been particularly high.
In the first nine months of the year, consumption corrected by calendar and seasonal effects was 1.5% lower than the previous year. The gross electricity demand in this period was 191,031 GWh, 0.6% less than the same period of 2011.
New wind record
This month a new record was set in demand coverage from wind power, when on the morning of the 24th, at 3.03 am, 64.25% of mainland demand (20,677 MW) was covered with this type of energy (13,285 MW), surpassing the previous peak of 61.06% last April 19, at 1.37 hours. In September wind production reached 3,465 GWh, an increase of 69.7% over the same period last year, representing 18% of total production.
Overall figures show that renewables generated 30% of total production, a higher percentage than in the same month of 2011, which was 22.3%. In addition, 53.1% of this month’s electricity production came from technologies that do not emit CO2 (nuclear, hydro and other renewables).
