Beijing Huadian Tianren Electric Power Control Technology Co.Ltd., a subsidiary of China Guodian Corporation, choose the Maxwell ultracapacitor technology as the main component of a project for the energy storage of a wind farm and its size makes it the largest system using this technology in wind farms across China.

The presentation project has included the use of 1152 ultracapacitors modules of 56 volt and 130 farads, making it the largest system of ultracapacitors in a wind farm across China.

What are ultracapacitors?
Ultracapacitors, also called electric double layer capacitors (EDLC), compared to conventional batteries, charge and discharge potentially faster, they have a longer useful life and higher performance at low temperatures. They are electrochemical capacitors that have an unusually high energy density and can be manufactured in almost any size, from a stamp size to large sizes. Its components are biodegradable and barely toxic (they do not use cobalt as traditional batteries).
They represent an independent and immediate source of energy and with an energy density several thousand times higher than that of conventional capacitors, and they generally reach an efficiency of 95%. Throughout their long life that can last up to ten years, they offer exceptional cycle stability, with the possibility of millions of charges and discharges. At the same time, they are practically insensitive to overloads and, above all, to deep discharges. Another important strength is their ability to store and deliver energy very efficiently in just a few seconds. They can operate in a wide range of temperature ranging from -40 ° C to +85 ° C and are very robust, virtually eliminating any need for maintenance.
Features of Maxwell ultracapacitors
Maxwell ultracapacitors stabilize variations in energy production of wind farms in the short term and the wiring in large installations, ensuring reliable access to the wind power fed into the grid.
Maxwell Technologies ultracapacitors modules of 56 volt provide power during the power transients of the energy generating source, allowing transition / bridge power supply to a long-term storage source such as a genset or a fuel cell during longer power outages. In industrial applications ultracapacitor modules provide energy for the proper disconnection of the process equipment.
Modules can last up to 15 years in applications for occasional use support and are designed to fit into standard rack systems up to 10KW (15 seconds) and 4U height. In a 19-inch rack two modules can be fitted, while three modules will fit in a 23-inch rack.
The Maxwell ultracapacitor modules effectively replace the batteries in these applications. They last up to 14 years without maintenance and are not toxic at all.
